People are being urged to reserve the ED at University Hospital Limerick for emergencies only.

There were 49 patients waiting for beds at the Dooradoyle facility today, according to INMO figures, 34 of those in the emergency department.

The UL Hospitals Group says a high number of seriously ill patients have been admitted in recent days, many of whom remain in the ED awaiting a bed.

The group is urging people to attend their GP or GP out of hours service in the first instance, while the medical assessment unit and the injury unit at Ennis General are open seven days a week.

But anyone who’s seriously injured or is concerned that their life is at risk are being reassured that they will be assessed in the ED and treated as a priority.
