The Dáil has been warned that a border extension would result in Clare GAA players being forced to play for Limerick.

Clare’s Independent TD has raised the issue during a debate surrounding the proposals to reject recommendations in the McKinley report.

The Independent Group of TDs are calling for the rejection of the McKinley report, which recommends the extension of the Cork City boundary into the county.

The prospect of the move going ahead has caused outrage among some local councillors, with threats of legal action to prevent it.

But Clare’s Independent TD says the issue impacts on not only to the rebel county, but other areas where boundary extensions have been considered including Clare and Limerick.

Dr Michael Harty fears any change could have a major impact, including in gaelic games.

In 2011, it was proposed that Limerick would annex a portion of Clare into the city, but at the time a campaign against it saw upwards on ten thousand people voting with their feet and the then Minister Phil Hogan decided against the proposal.

Deputy Harty doesn’t believe it’s an issue that should be revisited.
