Growth In Use Of Ennis-Athenry Rail Line

New figures show over 352,000 people traveled on the Limerick-Galway rail line last year.

Figures from Iarnrod Eireann, which are being highlighted by the West on Track group, show this includes nearly 134,000 people who travelled on the Ennis-Athenry portion of the route that opened in 2010.

That figure grew by a third last year, and the railways lobby group feels is a strong performance that more than justifies the 96 million euro investment.

Questions have been asked about the future of that rail line, which has experienced much lower traffic levels in the past, but West on Track spokesman Colman O’Raghaillaigh feels these figures tell a much different story.
