The Transport Minister has opened the door to the possibility of direct government supports to airlines, to allow them fly key routes out of Shannon Airport.

Minister Eamon Ryan has been pressed by a number of local representatives for funding to support the return of routes to Heathrow, New York and Boston in particular.

These are seen as important for tourism, and also business travel to Europe and the US.
