Fear Rates System Could See Vacant Commercial Properties Demolished

Concern is being expressed in Clare that the ‘antiquated’ rates system could lead to commercial buildings being demolished where people can’t afford to pay up.

Sixmilebridge Councillor PJ Ryan is concerned that the current system is based on legislation dating back to 1838.

The government is currently drafting a Rates Bill which would change how commercial property owners pay and how much they are charged but there are calls now for a clause to be introduced to protect owners of vacant properties.
