Clare’s Independent TD fears Ireland is heading for an “internal Brexit” with the loss of so many post offices.

John Lynch from Kilkee there, vocallising the concerns of many in wake of the announcement that six post offices in West and North Clare are to close.

The confirmation of this news from An Post has seen attentions turn to government, with renewed criticism of how it has handled the situation.

Yesterday, Sinn Féin’s Noeleen Moran said Fianna Fáil and Independents should withdraw their support for government if these closures go ahead.

Today, on Clare FM’s Morning Focus, Deputy Michael Harty agreed, saying he would pull all backing for the Fine Gael-led administration if post offices close.

And he thinks Fianna Fáil should do likewise.

Affected communities in Clare have already begun to rally together to fight back against closures.

A number of community meetings have been held, with one to take place tonight in Fanore and another in Kilfenora tomorrow.

The six post offices which are due to close are all located in the West Clare municipal district, and now the Councillors representing that area have drawn up a motion to call on the county’s Oireachtas members to postpone the closures for at least three years.

Kilrush Fine Gael Councillor Gabriel Keating wants to see an overhaul of post offices, under the Action Plan for Rural Development, to keep services in small towns and villages.
