With the Christmas spirit well and truly upon us, Clare’s towns are bustling with people who are sorting out their last minute shopping.

While for many, it’s a stressful few days to make sure everything is in place ahead of December 25th, it’s putting a big smile on the faces of the county’s retailers.

Mary Kelly’s card shop on O’Connell Street in Ennis has had a busy few weeks while people were getting their cards in the post.

Brenda Monahan works there and she says it’s the local cards in particular that have proven popular.

On High Street is Patrick Bourke’s Ennis store – he has been saying a good boost in trade in both this shop and his Kilrush branch.

He says a high number of people visiting home from overseas have been dropping in for gifts and Christmas outfits.

And of course, food and drink sales are seeing a healthy spike over the festive season.

Most people will have ordered their turkey or goose and ham by now – but it seems people are still stocking up on their favourite tipples.

Mark Harris of The Wine Buff on Lower Market Street in Ennis is hoping this trend won’t take too much of a hit come January.
