Driver-less Cars May Play Role In Rural Transport Solution For Clare

Driver-less cars may play a key role in transport solutions for rural Clare.

Expressions of interest are being sought by Clare County Council to develop a “rural Uber” type solution, where an app is being developed to link those with transport to those in need of a lift.

It’s being part-funded by Enterprise Ireland and is being supported by Jaguar Land Rover, who recently announced the opening of a new facility in Shannon from which driver-less cars will be developed.

A pilot scheme is due to be held in around a year’s time, and although driver-less cars won’t be used at that stage, Michael Neylon of the Council’s Rural Development Directorate says they’re making sure their project will be able to link up with them in the future.
