The Taoiseach has suggested that there could be scope to find a solution that could see Shannon Heritage open its sites for longer this summer.

Micheál Martin was responding in the Dáil to a question on the matter from Clare’s Independent TD Michael McNamara, who called for legislation to bring about balanced regional development, including in the aviation sector.

Shannon Heritage sites including Bunratty and King John’s Castles reopened last week but are due to close again at the end of August, while Cragganouwen, Knappogue and Dungauire Castles will remain closed.

The decision has been criticised by some tourism providers, and Micheal Martin says there could be scope to allow heritage sites to be open.
