Concern Over Threat To Dolphins From Trawlers In Shannon Estuary

Concerns have emerged about the safety of dolphins as a result of over-fishing in the Shannon Estuary.

Trawlers have been operating in the waters near Moneypoint in West Clare in recent days, using large nets, which Independent Councillor Ian Lynch says has led to concern among some tourism providers locally.

Fishing of this kind is legal in these waters at this time of year but Councillor Lynch believes steps need to be taken to protect the population of bootlenose dolphins and marine life in the waters there.
