Clare’s Independent TD is blaming structural problems within the HSE for inefficiencies within the the hospital system which are impacting negatively on patients.

Addressing the Dáíl on behalf of the Independent Rural Alliance, Deputy Michael Harty says there’s no accountability or transparency within the Health Service Executive because of the way it’s currently organised.

The OECD has found that Ireland has one of the highest spends on health services with some of the worst outcomes when it comes to accident and emergency treatment times, delayed admissions and waiting lists.

Dr Harty is calling for legislation to be put in place to deal with the issue, saying there’s many examples where there’s a lack of value for the money being invested, including here in the Midwest.

He says HSE decisions are compounding overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick – by closing GP access to Medical Assessment units at Ennis and Nenagh.
