Clare TD Questions HIQA Accomodation Standards

A Clare TD has questioned HIQA accomodation standards which could result in the closure of thousands of beds at state-run nursing homes.

According to The Irish Times, the health watchdog is introducing a new 'get tough' policy to tackle a lack of progress with long-promised refurbishment and improvements at centres across the country.

They want residents to be provided with a minimum level of space, with no more than two people in the same bedroom.

Earlier this year, reports named St. Joseph's in Ennis and Raheen Community Nursing Unit in Tuamgraney as being among 21 nursing homes nationwide which were in danger of closure because they don't meet the required standards.

However, Deputy Michael McNamara isn't convinced they're in the best interests of residents.
