Clare Leaving Cert Examiner Questions Fairness Of Calculated System

A Clare teacher has raised fresh concern over whether the country’s Leaving Cert grades system will be fair.

Concerns have emerged following controversy over exam results in Scotland, where over 100 thousand students had results downgraded by a national moderation process.

A U-turn by the Scottish government means they’ve now been awarded their teachers’ prediction instead.

Education Minister Norma Foley recently said that individual grades for leaving certs here will have to be checked and reviewed using different demographic characteristics including gender and socio-economic status.

But Teacher at St Caimin’s Community School in Shannon and Leaving Cert Examiner, David Beirne doesn’t see how that system can work fairly.
