The Clare Fianna Fail convention is due to take place next week, with four candidates in the running for a seat in the next Dáil.

But a row has erupted within the party, after members were last night told that they’d be selecting one West Clare candidate and another from East Clare.

This would have put South-East Clare Councillor Cathal Crowe against sitting TD Timmy Dooley, with John Hillary and Rita McInerney contesting the other spot on the Fianna Fáil ticket.

As a result, Councillor Crowe is withdrawing from the race, though he’s ruled out running as an independent.

The PRO of Clare Fianna Fáil doesn’t believe that the party’s new strategy in the county will affect it’s chances of securing a second seat in the next Dáil.

Michael McTigue has sympathised with Cathal Crowe, saying he’s one of the brightest in the party in this county.

He admits there is an element of unfairness in the decision, but he doesn’t believe it will be reversed.
