The Chair of Clare’s Housing Committee says it’s disgusting to think that private landlords are using the housing crisis to make money.

Shannon Independent Councillor Gerry Flynn is reacting to a new documentary which has uncovered widespread breaches across the in health and safety standards across the sector.

It’s emerged that only 4% of registered rental homes in the country were inspected last year and of those, 69% failed to meet standards.

The Junior Housing Minister has described the condition of some of the country’s rental accommodation as a disgrace and says the government is setting aside 2.5 million euro for inspections of accommodation next year.

Minister English wants to see the inspection rate rise to 25 per cent as soon as possible.

But the Chair of Clare County Council’s Housing Committee believes that inspecting only twenty-five in every hundred homes is a “joke”.

The Shannon Independent Councillor insists that current contracts are allowing authorities to shirk their responsibilities.
