Cautious Welcome For New Alcohol Display Options

New options aimed at making alcohol less visible in shops have been given a cautious welcome in Clare.

The Public Health Alcohol bill is being passed by the Seanad today after a number of compromises were reached with small retailers, who had been concerned about the impact proposed “booze curtains” would have on their businesses.

Now, more options will be available including separating alcohol from other products behind a barrier, placing it in a standalone cabinet or displaying it in no more than three units.

Shops will be given two years to implement the changes.

But Sixmilebridge Fine Gael Councillor and former shop keeper John Crowe has been telling Clare FM’s Fiona Cahill that he believes the new options should be brought in on a trial basis:
