A memorial plaque could be erected at the site of a former Mother and Baby home in Kilrush.

The Kilrush facility was open in the 1920s, and during that time, 321 women were admitted, while 180 children were born at the facility over the same period.

The Kilrush Mother and Baby home is now among 15 such institutions nationally which are being investigated by a Commission of Investigation into the matter.

The Council’s Memorial Committee will now examine calls for those who were in the home to be commemorated on the site.

Ennis Fine Gael Councillor Mary Howard says that society’s treatment of these women raises serious questions.
