Breastcheck Rollout next week

The long awaited breastcheck service will be offered to the women of Clare at last in just over a week’s time.

The potentially life saving free mammograms have been offered to women aged between 50 and 64 in most parts of the country for some years now, but all obstacles to the roll out of the service in Clare have now been overcome after years of waiting.

A Breast Check mammogram is a relatively simple breast x-ray aimed at the early detection of cancer and an appointment takes approximately half an hour.

The vast majority of women are found to be perfectly healthy with less than one per cent diagnosed with cancer but for years now concerns have been expressed at the lack of screening for the women of Clare.

Delays were caused initially by staffing and funding issues, followed by confusion over the location of a mobile unit in Ennis, but the Breastcheck service has now confirmed the potentially life saving service will be located in the grounds of Clare County Council at New Road Ennis from Monday September 27th.

North Clare women were screened in August 2009 at the Breast Check Western Unit in Galway and now eligible women aged 50-64 living in Ennis and surrounding areas will soon receive letters and appointments for breast screening.
