5 Clare Towns And Villages Pumping Raw Sewage Into Environment

Five Clare towns and villages are still pumping raw sewage into the Environment.

Ballyvaughan, Clarecastle, Kilkee, Kilrush and Liscannor are among 38 areas across the country highlighted in a new report from the Environmental Protection Agency, although planned works have been announced for some of those areas.

Ennistymon, Lahinch and Shannon are among 28 areas where discharges are below EU standards, while 9 areas in Clare have been highlighted among the urban areas in need of most improvement.

The EPA says years of under-investment in the system is one of the main causes, but spokesperson Darragh Page says Irish Water is not meeting its own targets for dealing with the issue.
