Management at University Hospital Limerick are to officially close a 17-bed ward there tomorrow.

Talks between the INMO and the UL Hospitals Group earlier failed to reach a resolution on the controversial closure of ward 1A.

The 17-bed room was opened in September 2017 as a short stay unit following the closure of the former emergency department in May 2017.

Now, it’s to close down to facilitate the opening of a new fracture unit there.

The INMO has expressed it’s “deep disappointment” at the move.

University Hospital Limerick continues to be the most overcrowded nationally – today alone, 51 are on trolleys in its emergency department.
