Sharon Collins Appeal Begins Today

"Lying Eyes" Sharon Collins and her hitman for hire, Essam Eid will today begin appeals against their convictions.

The Ennis woman and Egyptian poker dealer were both jailed for six years for their roles in the murder plot of weathly businessman PJ Howard and his two sons.

They are appealing the convictions on several grounds and given the complexity of the case , its expected to continue into tomorrow.

Air India May Choose Shannon For New European Base

Shannon is vying with a number of international airports to become a new European base for Air India.

It's believed that the airline is looking to move from it's current base in Frankfurt due to high charges, with a number of potential replacements.

These include Vienna, Madrid, Copenhagen and either Shannon or Dublin.

It's hoped that Shannon's US pre-clearance facility could be a key factor in persuading the airline to set up a hub at the MidWest Airport.

Impact officals meet over compulsary Shannon redundancies

 

It's feared the number of cabin crew redundancies by Aer Lingus at Shannon Airport could be greater than than the 102 first planned.

Management is set to meet with trade Union Impact today to discuss the company's plan for 230 compulsory redundancies at the three airport after the workers rejected the cost saving plan.

Around 440 further jobs will go on a voluntary basis - from the 4 staff groupings who voted to accept the 97 million Euro restructuring deal.

Calls for fire awareness campaign to avoid costly call outs

 

It's claimed charges for the Clare Fire services are ranging from 150 Euro to 20,000 Euro.

The figures were raised with calls for a public awareness campaign to remind Clare householders and business owners that they'll have to foot the cost of calling out the fire services to their premises.

The charges vary depending on the duration of the fire, the attendance of extra fire personnel and whether the fire happens at night time or on bank holidays.

Clare Top Cop says Gardaí make significant inroads on crime

The new Chief Superintendent in Clare believes Gardaí are making significant strides against burglaries following a number of arrests in the last week.

John Kerin has told Clare FM he's committed to lowering the number of break-ins to local homes and businesses following numerous home burglaries recently and several violent robberies at businesses in Shannon.

Vehement opposition to proposed boundary extension

Clare Councillors have again re-iterated their strong opposition to proposals that Limerick City's boundary extension be extended into parts of the county.

At a meeting of the council last evening, councillors voted to send a letter to the Minister for the Environment, the Chairman of the Midwest Task force and to Limerick City Council refuting any suggestion that parts of Clare be co-opted to within the city boundaries. 

No MRSA cases at County Hospital over 9 month in 09

There were no reported cases of hospital super bug MRSA at Ennis General in the first nine months of last year.

New figures on the bloodstream infection show the number of cases overall across the state fell to 355 from January to September 2009 down from 439 the year before.

The largest number of cases were reported by Galway University Hospital- 28 in all. Some 25 cases were reported by  St James’s Hospital in Dublin and 21 by Cork University Hospital.
 

Calls for Clare inclusion in UL naming.

 

Governors at the University of Limerick are to be asked to consider changing it's name to reflect it's expansion into Clare.

Meelick Councillor Cathal Crowe has suggested that the name be changed to 'The University of Limerick and Clare', given that the college continues to expand on the Northern bank of the River Shannon.

Clare County Council are to write a letter to the university's Governing body to ask them to consider the name change which Councillor Crowe feels is overdue
