On The Afternoon Show today Gavin Grace and Eddie Downey – IFA Deputy President and Countryside Chairman discussed the issue of roads around the country. Eddie Downey has strongly criticised local authorities for their failure to provide basic maintenance of rural roads. He said, “The state of disrepair of rural roads in some areas across the country is a disgrace. There are roads which are almost impossible to travel and pose road safety issues”. In a clear warning to local authorities that this cannot and will not be tolerated, Eddie Downey said farmers and rural dwellers have a basic right to have rural roads maintained.
Actor and Comedian Michael Winslow was also a guest of The Afternoon Show today. Michael shot to fame when he appeared in the Police Academy series of films as “Motormouth Larvelle Jones” – his vocal gymnastic talent has also featured in Mel Brooks Star Wars spoof “Spaceballs” and in Robot Chicken and Family Guy. He’s appearing at Dolan’s in Limerick tomorrow night. Clare FM’s Maire Moynahan spoke with Michael and asked him about being dubbed as “The man of 10,000 sound effects”.
Ruth Marshall is a Storyteller, Poet, Author and Life Coach based in Bodyke. She joined Gavin in studio as today is the feast of St. Brigid. She spoke of how important St. Brigid is to the people of Ireland and discussed some of the miracles attached to her. Also tomorrow at the West Clare Resource Centre in Miltown Malbay they will be hosting a Celebration of Brigid, Goddess and Saint where there are lots of events taking place and Ruth Marshall will be sharing some poetry and stories inspired by Brigid on the day. Also on today’s show, John Kennedy, an ex-Clare Boss joined Gavin to talk about Clare’s footballers who will take on Waterford this Sunday in the sides’ opening National League encounter of the year. It’s the biggest match to date for new Clare boss Mick O’Dwyer. Kevin McGillicuddy from Clare FM Sport was also in studio to talk about all the upcoming sporting action this weekend.
Eileen Toomey from Ennistymon also spoke to Gavin about how she and four other brave souls from East Clare Community Co-op are taking part in Irelands toughest 10km challenge this Sunday. The “Hell and Back” Challenge takes place in Kilruddery estate in Wicklow and Eileen will undertake it to raise funds for East Clare Counselling Service.
