Morning Focus Tuesday May 29

Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore, Labour Party leader joined John Cooke on Tuesday’s Morning Focus
He was urging the Clare electorate to vote in favour of the EU Fiscal Stability Treaty this Thursday
He says the fiscal treaty is a “safety net” which would provide Ireland with an insurance policy for future emergency funding
And he maintains that this is an important and necessary step on the road to recovery- it is about having a stable euro, it is about having confidence for investors to create jobs here, and it is about making sure this country has access to emergency funding if we need it

UNITE is one of three major trade unions with combined membership of more than 100,000 who have issued a strong call to vote no in Thursday’s referendum on what they are calling the austerity treaty
Unite among with the CPSU and Mandate trade unions represent workers across the private and public sector and a wide range of industries from retail to transport and finance
Regional Secretary Jimmy Kelly joined John to explain.
He said the Treaty is only about austerity and does not have any provisions relating to growth, that it has been rushed in as a panic measure- no less than ten Euro zone countries have now slipped back into recession
He maintains the problem with the treaty is that it enshrines the very policies that have caused that recession to get deeper and more damaging
He concluded that Ireland has a chance to say No, and to pull Europe back from the brink of economic self harm it has been engaged in to disastrous effect over the past three years.

Over the weekend Kilquane Cemetery in Parteen village was badly vandalised
On Saturday evening a number of local people observed two gangs of youths drinking inside the cemetery
It later transpired that an old headstone had been smashed and a pole mounted CCTV camera unit, which I bought and donated to the Kilquane Cemetery Committee last year, had been pulled to the ground and destroyed
Empty beer bottles and cans lay strewn about the place- they are very upset and angry about this
About seven or eight people volunteer to keep the place tidy and well kept
120 headstones- one of which – McAdams – alleged traitor who sold the pass across the Shannon in 1690 to the Williamites
Padraig O’Brian- Labasheeda piper – buried there too
6th Century ruin and the graves are 1700
Donal O’Riain in Parteen is Chairperson of the Kilquane Cemetery Committee, he explained what happened.
