Kilrush’s bid to host the 2013 National Famine Commemoration has been successful
Last October Clare County Council and Kilrush Town Council entered a detailed bid to host the event, which was first held in 2009 and will be staged in Munster this year
The West Clare Town was one of the worst affected during the famine, and the bid has received the support of a number of local groups and political representatives
Mairead O’Brien, Mayor of Kilrush and Independent Town Councillor, welcomed the news and outlined some of the plans for the commemoration

Paddy Waldron of the Kilrush Historical Society was on the committee who prepared the application for this- he said there’s a huge amount of work ahead of them now
Jimmy Deenihan T.D., Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht  paid tribute to the immense commitment and support in the community in Kilrush and wider county area, it confirms the deep regard still held today for all those who perished, suffered and emigrated during this catastrophic period in our history

Clare County Council today announced that it is to take in charge extensive housing developments comprising 900 residential and other properties at Westbury in southeast Clare
The move follows extensive negotiations with bondholders who held bonds on behalf of McInerney Homes Ltd and Chieftain Construction Ltd., both of whom have been in receivership and liquidation for some time
