Morning Focus – Thursday 29/06/17

Thursday’s show was a lively mix of debate, entertainment and news, featuring a look ahead to a celebration of the Nigerian community in Clare.

The opening topic focused on what changes to the electoral boundaries will mean in Clare as up to 6,000 people in the South East of the county are brought back into this constituency. Gavin discussed the issue with Former Mayor of Clare and political expert, Patrica McCarthy from Shannon.

The show then returned to the proposed greenway from Ennis to Lahinch. Senior Engineer with Clare County Council, Tom Tiernan joined Gavin to discuss the long-term plan for the route.

There’s fresh hope that a Traveller health project in Clare will be retained despite the closure of Ennis CDP, its parent organisation. Clare FM’s Fiona McGarry spoke to Ronnie Fay of Pavee Point, the national Traveller representative organisation.

There’s been alarm at the suicide rate among members of the clergy and calls for a helpline to support priests. Gavin heard more about this issue from Fr Brendan Hoban of the Association of Catholic Priests.

The show then returned to the issue of older drivers and concerns over their safety on the roads. Gavin spoke with Stella O’Gorman of Clare Older People’s Council who believes older people are safer on the roads than many other drivers. Listen back below:
