Morning Focus – Monday 15/05/17

One of Ireland’s leading visionaries, Dr Brendan O’Regan, was honoured at Shannon Airport today, Monday, on what would have been his 100th birthday. The Sixmilebridge native was one of the country’s greatest ever economic and social innovators. He was to the fore in developments at Shannon Airport, the Shannon Free Zone, Bunratty Castle, Duty Free shopping and more. Morning Focus heard from Shannon Airport MD Andrew Murphy and Fr Harry Bohan as well as archive audio of the man himself.

We also heard from Clarecastle-based IT expert Edel Mee in response to the major cyber attack that had taken place across the world during the weekend. Edel explained what happened and how people can protect themselves against malware.

We opened the show with the usual paper review followed by HIQA’s Rachel Flynn who explained to Gavin that HIQA is conducting a patient satisfaction survey. Next, we heard from Dr Catherine Naughton of UL about the findings of a new study which shows the impact on kids of psychological abuse in the home.

Efforts to promote Shannon Estuary for marine investment have stepped up with plans for a delegation to travel to Norway later this month. Niall O’Callaghan of IDA Midwest and Sheila Downes of Clare County Council joined Gavin in studio.

Finally, we were joined in studio by Frank Whelan, Chairman of the Fleadh Executive Committee for an overview of Fleadh 2017, the changes we should expect since last year and to announce the concerts. Also in studio was Blacky O’Connell, Siobhán Peoples and Michael Queally who played two tunes for us, one of which you can watch below.
