Clare FM Win PPI “Station Of The Year” at PPI Radio Awards 2011″
Celebrations are continuing at the new home of local radio in the Banner County after Clare FM was awarded the PPI Radio Award for Best Local Station 2011. Now in its 11th year, the PPI Radio Awards aim is to celebrate the art and skill of radio production and programming with hundreds of entries each year from national and local radio stations across the country. The prize is seen as a major boost to Clare FM following its recent move to state of the art, purpose built studios on Francis Street in Ennis and after recent success in the FBD Clare Business Excellence Awards.
The PPI awards were presented at a gala ceremony at the Lyrath Estate Hotel in Kilkenny on Friday night, where Clare FM’s Executive Chairman, Liam O’Shea, General Manager, Susan Murphy and a team of staff accepted the prize to loud applause from colleagues throughout the industry as well as celebrity guests and some of the tops names in Irish radio. Clare FM was also given the PPI Bronze Award for Best News Bulletins on the night.
Seen as the “Oscars” of the Irish Radio Industry, the PPI’s are sponsored by Phonographic Performance Ireland and, according to PPI Committee Chairman Sean Murtagh, are “the most sought after accolade” in the Irish Radio industry. Congratulating Clare FM, Mr. Murtagh said the top prize for Clare’s local radio station, “simply means that Clare FM is the best local radio station in Ireland”.
Clare FM has enjoyed multiple awards success in the past including wins at the New York Festival’s Broadcasting Awards and the top PPI prizes for News and Documentaries, but this is the first time in its 22 year history, that the station has been named as number one in Ireland. Executive Chairman Liam O’Shea explained that following many years of “tough competition”, Clare FM won the Bronze Award in the PPI Radio Awards 2009, followed by Silver last year, and he expressed his delight at the station’s successful bid for gold this year. Comparing the much sought after prize to the Liam McCarthy cup, O’Shea said Clare FM’s success is “real proof that perseverance and hard work does pay off”.
Station Manager Susan Murphy described the PPI Award for Best Local Radio Station 2011 as “an all inclusive prize, shared by all staff at Clare FM, including a talented team of broadcasters and journalists, as well as a dedicated, hardworking group of advertising executives, accounts and administration staff and others who give their talents behind the scenes. Dedicating the win to Clare FM’s listeners though, Ms Murphy said the station is “defined, above all, by the people of Clare”, offering her thanks to the public for loyal listenership, and to local businesses for their support through advertising over the years, she added that Clare FM is “honoured” to be part of their lives, sharing in their “everyday happenings and inspirational stories”.
Executive Chairman Liam O’Shea, added his thanks to the people of Clare and the business community in the mid-west region. “Times are tough for many right now”, he said and many are “suffering”, but he stressed Clare FM’s commitment to supporting local businesses as Ireland’s top Radio station and expressed his hope for more local successes and “many more inspirational stories” to come.
Clare FM has won two national media awards for News and Current affairs.
The Justice Media Awards were presented at a gala ceremony in Dublin on Thursday, June 2nd, where Clare FM’s Deputy News Editor Trudy Waters was honoured for her court reporting on the Lying Eyes – Sharon Collins Appeal case.
The Law Society of Ireland also named Clare FM as the Local Radio Winner, presenting the station’s Head of News and Current Affairs John Cooke with an award for the Free Legal Advice Slot on the Morning Focus Programme.
It’s Clare FM’s third year in a row to win at the Justice Media Awards, in which RTE, TV3 and the Irish Examiner were also among the big winners. THe Law Society Awards follow previous success for Clare FM News in the PPI Radio Awards and the New York Radio Awards.
