Ennis Priest Shares His Memories of the late John Hume

The family of John Hume are asking people to light a candle this evening, instead of lining the streets to pay their respects.

They’re concerned a public gathering for the 83-year-old’s funeral may put people at risk of contracting Covid-19.

Following the announcement of his death yesterday, tributes continue to be made today to the man who together with David Trimble won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998.

The former SDLP leader will be removed from his home in Donegal to Saint Eugene’s Cathedral in Derry this evening.

His funeral will be live-streamed as it takes place tomorrow morning.

Former Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams has described Mr Hume as a “giant in Irish politics.”

The pair famously met in a bid to end the decades of violence during the Troubles.

Ahead of his funeral an Ennis parish priest been sharing his memories of the late John Hume.

As a newly ordained priest in the early eighties, Fr Tom Ryan worked as a curate in St. Eugene’s Cathedral in the diocese of Derry.
