United Airlines has pledged its commitment to expanding its services at Shannon Airport with the announcement of a new Chicago service
Non stop daily flights from Shannon to Chicago will commence in June 2013 and operate on a seasonal basis until the end of August in what’s being welcomed as a significant development of transatlantic services from Ireland’s Mid-West
As plans progress for a new independent management structure at Shannon, the Transport Minister Leo Varadkar says the news from United is a real vote of confidence

The news was welcomed on Thursday’s Morning Focus as John Cooke spoke with Lahinch hotelier Michael Vaughan, President of the Irish Hotels’ Federation, and Niall Gibbons,  CEO of Failte Ireland.

A meeting organised by the Irish Citizens’ Party with the theme of ‘People Power’ will take place in the Temple Gate Hotel at 8pm tonight- DeputyLuke ‘Ming’ Flanagan  – Roscommon Independent TD – will be the guest speaker at the meeting. All are welcome are Deputy Flanagan explained.

The results of an Association f  Catholic Priests Leadership survey last March made it clear that there is a crisis of confidence in the leadership of the Church, and that some Church teachings are no longer accepted by a large majority even of those who faithfully attend Mass- and that’s according to the ACP itself
Faced with all of this the ACP believe that it is of crucial importance that there is open discussion at all levels within the Church, in order to try to find a way out of our difficulties

  • National Breastfeeding Week runs until this Sunday 

The rate of breastfeeding in Ireland has risen by at least seven per cent since 2005, new research from the ESRI has shown
This is mainly due to the increasing maternal age, and the growing share of mothers from Eastern Europe
However Irish breastfeeding rates still lag far behind EU standards
Just over half of mothers here breastfeed, compared to over 90 per cent in Scandinavian countries – John spoke with Margaret O’Leary, Clinical Midwife Specialist, Lactation at the Maternity Hospital in Limerick about the misconceptions and benefits of breastfeeding.

Clare native Martin Falsey is Hon President of the Clareman’s Association, Chicago – he had a chat with John and welcomed the announcement by United of a new service from Chicago to Shannon.

The Kilfenora Youth band were invited to attend and perform at the Youth Work Ireland conference that took place in Farmleigh House last Saturday week. They had a fantastic time as they explained to John when they joined him in studio for a chat and a tune. Brian McMahon, Younger Voice Group with Clare Youth Service, was also at Farmleigh and he was also in studio
