The Today Show – Thursday January 19th

On the Today Show this Thursday afternoon we heard reaction from the people of Clare to the septic tank charges and the proposed broadcast charge, which is set to replace the television license. Including a Corofin caller – Kay – who voiced her concern as to when the additional charges would end, while Clare FM’s Dermot Hogan took to the streets to ask people around the county how they feel about the new raft of charges being implemented by the government.

Also on today’s show, Alison Cummins, Co Founder of the inaugural National Entrepreneurial Business Awards (EBA’s) spoke to Gavin Grace about the initiative, which has been launched to raise awareness and acknowledge the many local businessmen and women throughout the country who have set-up or continued to trade, despite adverse economic conditions. The EBA’s will consist of 26 regional finals, taking place in each county throughout Ireland, making it the most comprehensive business awards ever to take place in Ireland. The regional winners of each category will receive prizes to help grow their businesses. The winner of the Entrepreneur of the Year award in all counties will be presented with a €5,000 cash prize in addition to securing their place in the national final on 18th May 2012.  For more details see…

Caroline Curneen from the European Consumer Centre spoke to Gavin about the cost of roaming charges for mobile users in the EU and how they could soon be reduced.  MEP’s in Brussels, including Irish FG MEP Sean Kelly, is calling for a drastic reduction in mobile data roaming charges. He wants operators to charge no more than 15 cent per megabyte in 2012 for mobile data roaming. And – he says – that figure should go down to 12 cent per megabyte in 2013. The roaming costs were reduced last year to a maximum of 35 cent and VAT per minute.
