There have been numerous crashes on the section of the M18 between Crusheen and Gort since it was opened a number of years ago, and last night was no different.

There were four separate crashes within minutes of each other on the same stretch, but on different sides of the motorway.

Two cars spun out of control on the southbound carriageway while two more crashed in the northbound lanes.

Gardaí and fire crews from Gort and Ennis, along with four ambulances attended the incidents. The occupants of all vehicles were assessed at the scene and found to be uninjured.

It’s understood the vehicles lost control following a downpour of hailstones and Met Éireann have confirmed that there was isolated showers in the area at that time.

But Councillor Pat Hayes doesn’t believe that weather alone is to blame for what seems to be an ongoing issue and he’s calling for a fresh investigation to be carried out into the route, before the road claims another life.

But Transport Infrastructure Ireland has once again hit out at any suggestion that the road is sub-par, saying a micro-climate in the area is to blame.

Spokesman Sean O’Neill insists that the only solution is for drivers to slow down and drive with care during severe weather conditions.
