Jon Walters scored twice in the first half after Harnik put the visitors in front however Alaba punished Ireland’s failure to push on in the second half with his deflected goal in injury time.

Giovanni Trapatonni admitted the side showed inexperience when defending the lead staying they gave away possession late in the game when they should have kept in the corner and wasted time.

The Italian was also asked if he could have made changes to midfield in the second half to get his team more possession and control when the Austrians were getting on top.

The draw means Ireland are fourth in the group but level on 8 points with second placed Sweden and third placed Austria, Germany lead on 16 points following last nights won over Kazakhstan.

Sweden have a game in hand on both us and Austria.

Elsewhere England remain second in their group following a 1-all draw away to Montenegro ,

Northern Ireland’s slim hopes are gone following their 2-0 loss to Israel at Windsor park while Scotland have no chance of qualifying following their 2-0 loss away to Serbia.
