Ten Clare players short-listed for Fitzgibbon

The contribution of Clare players to third level hurling has been recognized, as 10 of the county’s players have been short-listed for the Fitzgibbon Cup team of the century.

Father and son Bill and Tony Loughnane of Feakle head the list of Clare players who have been short-listed for the Irish Daily Mail Fitzgibbon Cup Team of the Century Short-list.

Both men attended University College Dublin, as did Des Dillon, Ruan’s Pat Henchy and goalkeeper Tommy Daly of Tulla.

Players have been judged solely on their performances for their college teams, but Clare’s All-Ireland winners of ’95 and ’97 are represented by UCG’s Jamesie O’Connor and UL pair Brian Lohan and Sean McMahon.

The list is rounded off by a pair of players from Sixmilebridge – Sean Stack represented Maynooth, while the late Niall McInerney played for University College Galway.

The ten Clare men are among 75 players short-listed for the best Fitzgibbon Cup team of the century, which will be announced at the end of the month.
