There will be a new manager for the Clare Senior Hurling team in 2017 after Davy Fitzgerald announced his resignation from the role.
The Sixmilebridge man issued a statement last night, outlining the reasons for his decision.
Fitzgerald brings the curtain down on a 5 year stint in charge of his native county, a period that saw an All Ireland and League title coming back to the Banner.
In his statement, he says the decision to go was entirely his own, and that he was not asked to step down.
The three time All Star stated that he informed the players he was unsure of his future in the aftermath of this years championship exit against Galway and asked the joint captains to assess the mood of the squad as a whole.
The players met early this week, with some senior members of the squad expressing their desire for a change of management.
Fitzgerald says in light of the divided opinions expressed, he felt the best course of action was to step away.
He concluded his statement by thanking the Clare supporters, and said while he made the decision with a heavy heart, he is confident there are more great days ahead for Clare hurling.
