Ireland coach Joe Schmidt says they'll try to keep Paul O'Connell playing until the end of next season.
The Lions second row has been linked with Toulon in recent days and although the move was dismissed by Munster it's believed the French club may try to tempt O'Connell into moving after the World cup.
IRFU performance Director David Nucifora says he will not be released early from his current deal which runs until June 2016 while Schmidt says it's up to the player himself to decide if he wants to continue playing after the World cup.
