Munster Colleges Senior B League Final

Rice College Ennis 0-6 St Marys Middleton 1-4

There was disappointment for Rice College, Ennis on Saturday afternoon in Meelick when they suffered an agonising 1 point defeat to St Marys Middleton in the Munster Colleges Senior B League Final. The two sides were evenly matched and despite soft underfoot conditions, the outcome was in doubt right to the final whistle, with Rice College fighting back in the second half but coming up just short as the final whistle sounded.

St Marys were first on the attack, when Chloe Sigerson reacted fastest to a free dropped into the square, collecting and striking towards goal, however Eilis Cahil blocked well and Michaela Roughan cleared from the danger area. Sigerson went for the point just a few minutes later for the opening score of the game, Chloe Neylon levelled matters for Rice College two minutes later. St Marys had the opportunity to push ahead on the scoreboard but were guilty of some wayward shooting and it was Rice Colleges Chloe McNamara who registered the next score with eighteen minute son the clock. Ally Smith had the sides level again when she won the battle for the puckout and went on the run before splitting the posts. The only goal of the game came in the twenty third minute and was well worked by St Marys. Sigerson stood over a free and sent it short with the ball returning to the St marys captain who struck high and hard lobbing the ball in over Roughans head. Both Lucy Wallace and Emily O’Keeffe piled on pressure in the Rice College danger area in the next passage of play but pressure from Sadbh O’Brien and Eilis Cahill saw the shot drift wide of the mark. Both sides added a point each, Sigerson for St Marys and Sinead Power for Rice College to leave a goal between the sides at half time, St Marys 1-3 Rice College 0-3.

Smith added a point for St Marys at the start of the second half, following good work by Deirdre Corcoran, this was to be to only score of the half for St Marys as Rice College came more into the game. Power converted a ‘45 to leave a goal between the sides. The Ennis school piled on the pressure but the back line for St Marys were strong in defence. Both sides hit wides before Power added another point for Rice College, McNamara having sent her the pass. With fifty minutes on the clock, Rice College missed a goal opportunity.
