Republic holds Russia to scoreless draw

 

The Republic of Ireland know 2 wins from their last 2 Euro qualifiers will guarantee them a play-off place at the very worst.

Giovanni Trapattoni’s side held off a wave of Russian attacks to draw 0-0 in Moscow.

Ireland’s hopes of qualification were helped by an incredible result in Zilina – Slovakia lost 4-0 to Armenia.

The result leaves Armenia and Slovakia on 14 points, one behind Ireland.

Russia are top of the group on 17 points.

The other result in Group B last night saw Macedonia beat our next opponents, Andorra 1-0.

Elsewhere, Northern Ireland’s hopes of reaching next year’s tournament are over after a 4-1 defeat in Estonia.

Ashley Young scored to give England a 1-0 win over Wales in Wembley.

Scotland beat Lithuania 1-0 in Group I to keep their slim hopes of qualification alive.
