The Rocket hasn’t won a tournament for 2 years and has dropped to 12 in the World rankings.
John Higgins also crashed out of the tournament.
The world champion saw fellow Scot Stephen Maguire complete a 6-4 win, having raced to a 5-1 lead.
In the other late match, Neil Robertson beat Graeme Dott 6-3 to reach the quarter- finals.
