Newmarket Celtic dropped points in the first game of their defence of the Clare and District Soccer League’s Premier division.

Last year, the defending champions won all 18 games en route to the title, but last night they were held to a 0-0 draw by Bridge United in McDonough Park.

Avenue United were the big winners beating Sporting Ennistymon 5-0 while Shannon Olympic overcame Kilrush Rangers 2-1.

Newly promoted Shannon Hibs were 3-1 victors over Turnpike Rovers thanks to goals from Pa Devanney, and from Gary and Darragh Leahy.

But Shannon sides were denied a treble as Town went down to Lifford by two goals to one.
