John Joe Nevin can win Ireland’s first medal at the Olympics tonight when he fights Oscar Valdez Fierro of Mexico in their bantamweight quarter-final.
A win for Nevin would mean the boxer is guaranteed at least a bronze medal in the division.
That fight is set for an 8.45pm start tonight.
In cycling, Martyn Irvine placed 14th in Heat 5 of the 4km Individual Pursuit as he continues in the Men’s Omnium. The Newtownards has it all to do in the remaining 2 events to challenge for a medal.
The runners are just past the halfway point in the Women’s Marathon, Linda Byrne and Ava Hutchinson are in 85 and 86th place, while Caitriona Jennings is 110th.
In shooting, Derek Burnett is on course to make the final of the Men’s Trap. The Longford man shot 47 from 50 after this morning’s opening rounds, putting him in a strong position to make the Top 6.
In Showjumping, Billy Twomey and Cian O’Connor have just completed their 2nd qualifying rounds of the individual event. O’Connor sits joint 13th of 33 as things stand, with Twomey joint 27th.
And coming up at lunchtime, Peter O’Leary and David Burrows feature in the Men’s Star Medal Race where they’ll start from 9th place.
The showpiece event of the day is the men’s 100m final, with Usain Bolt looking to win back to back Olympic gold medals in the sprint. The semi finals get going at a quarter to 8 tonight.
While at 2pm, Andy Murray and Roger Federer meet on Wimbledon’s Centre Court for the second time in 4 weeks, this time with an Olympic Gold Medal at stake.
