Ennis Youth Heavyweight Martin Jim Mongan captured the National Youths title last night with victory over Dubliner Martin McDonagh from the Baldoyle club in the National Stadium in Dublin.
This was a huge victory for the sixteen-year- old who completely overwhelmed the Dubliner over three absorbing rounds , and will elevate the Ennis boxer to the elite squad’s central coaching echelon in the coming months.
Martin’s cousin Martin ‘John’ who contested the Cruiserweight final at 80 Kilos was less fortunate in his final with reigning champion Jimmy O’Reilly from Portlaoise . He lost out on a split decision at the end of three pulsating rounds , where he held sway in the first round , continued to find the target in the second , but came up short in the final round , tiring palpably over the three minutes in which the Portlaoise fighter finished stronger.
