The Kiwi had surgery on a shoulder injury earlier in the month, but has decided to call it a day based on medical advice.

During his time with Munster, Howlett scored 35 tries in over 100 appearances – he also won 62 caps with New Zealand and is the All Blacks top try scorer of all time.

Munster have also announced that prop BJ Botha has extended his contract by two years.

His fellow prop Wian du Preez, however, is returning to South Africa.
