McEvoy finished in eighth position in his heat of the 200m backstroke, in a time of 2:05.49.

That put him 21st overall, and just one second outside of a place in the semi-finals.

He's back in action tomorrow in the shorter 50m backstroke event.

Elsewhere today the pick of the action from an Irish point of view is again in boxing, where Belfast's Brendan Irvine fights for gold.

He takes on a Russian opponent in the light-flyweight final this afternoon.

In badminton, Sam and Josh Magee will contest the Men's Doubles Quarter-finals, also this afternoon, knowing a win would move them towards a medal.
