Mc Illroy on top at St Andrews

Rory McIlroy hit a record-equalling opening round for a major to take charge of the 2010 Open Championship.

The 21-year-old Northern Ireland star took advantage of perfect playing conditions to score a remarkable nine-under par 63 that has given him a three-shot lead.

John Daly, Andrew Coltart and Louis Oosthuizen are tied for second on six under, with Tiger Woods also well-placed after his opening round on five under par.

Shane Lowry has moved to three under par, while Darren Clarke has just finished on two under but there was frustration for Padraig Harrington today, who had to settle for a one over par 73.
