In a statement last night, the club claimed that apart from Champion’s League qualification, the Italian had failed to meet any of the targets set for him this year.

They also mentioned a need to develop an "holistic" approach to football at the club.

Outgoing Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini has been widely reported to be lined up to step into the hot seat for next season.

Although the Chilean has denied that a deal is already in place,

It means Mancini won’t be saying goodbye at the Etihad.

Assistant manager Brian Kidd is taking charge for their final two games.

The first of those is tonight at 8pm when they travel to Reading.

Before that at 7:45pm Wigan go to the Emirates to take on Arsenal knowing only a win can save them from relegation.

The Gunners on the other hand, need three points to move back ahead of Tottenham and into the top four.
