Kilkenny the champions again

Kilkenny have reclaimed the Liam McCarthy Cup, beating Tipperary by 2-17 to 1-16 in this year’s All Ireland Hurling final.

The Cats built up a five point lead before Tipp finally got on the scoreboard in the 16th minute.

The reigning champions closed to within three points coming up to the break but Michael Fennelly cut through the Tipp defence and latched onto Richie Hogan’s pass to beat Brendan Cummins in the 35th minute,

and at the break the Cats led by 1-8 to 6 points.

The second half continued with fierce intensity and Richie Hogan got a goal himself to extend Kilkenny’s lead in the 49th minute.

Five minutes later half-time substitute Pa Bourke got a goal back for Tipp to keep them in the game,

but a determined Kilkenny side were able to maintain their lead and capture their fifth All Ireland in six years.

In the curtain-raiser the Galway minors had an impressive 1-21 to 1-12 points victory over Dublin to win this year’s minor hurling final.

Captain Shane Maloney led from the front for the Tribesmen, notching a goal and 9 points.
