The former All Blacks winger had been dealing with a rare and serious kidney disease, which had forced him to retire from the game in 2002.

Lomu burst onto the world stage at the 1995 World Cup, scoring two tries against Ireland in their opening pool game.

A further four came in an incredible performance against England in the semi finals.

Eight more tries came in the 1999 finals, and Lomu remains the joint-top try-scorer in the tournaments history.

New Zealand Prime Minister, John Key has been among those paying tribute.
