Clare Handball League Division 1

Kilkishen B and Newmarket Bounce Back

Kilkishen and Clooney hosted action this week for Round 2 of Clare Handball League Division 1. Last year’s defending champions Clooney Quin (Fergal Coughlan Jnr, Seán Coughlan, Shane Hayes, Pat Nolan) were hoping to make it back-to-back wins, as they welcomed Kilkishen B (Kevin O’Callaghan, Sean Murphy, John Cooney, Conor Cooney) to Clooney.

In the first tie of the match it was the Coughlan brothers who stormed into action as they took an early lead against O’Callaghan and Murphy. However O’Callaghan and Murphy finished strongly making sure that the match was very much alive going into the second tie.

In the second tie, Hayes and Nolan were in action against the two Cooney brothers. It was the Cooneys who took control ensuring Kilkishen B bounced back from their Round 1 defeat and claimed the win on an overall score of 74-66.

In Kilkishen, Kilkishen A (Christy Philpott Jnr, Brendan Hannon, Mark Crehan, Henry McGrath) hosted Newmarket on Fergus (Mike Kelly, Glenn Murray, Blake Sheedy, Darragh Burke). Newmarket won the match 63-54 taking advantage of a rusty-looking Kilkishen A who had come off a bye week in Round 1.

Both of these results have really opened up Division 1 as, currently, Tuamgraney, Newmarket on Fergus, Clooney Quin and Kilkishen B are all level at the top of the table with one win each.

The tie to look forward to from Round 3 has to be the repeat of last year’s final, Tuamgraney v Clooney Quin.
