The veteran goalkeeper is set to speak to Giovanni Trapattoni later this week about the prospect of coming out of retirement.

The 36-year-old is Ireland’s most capped international but has fallen out of favour with Aston Villa this season and is desperate for a chance to increase his playing time.

The FAI have confirmed that Trapattoni will speak to Given over the phone ‘very shortly’ and the keeper is now expected to feature in the squad for Ireland’s friendly against Poland at the start of February.

Meanwhile, Seamus Coleman says he’s determined to repay the faith that has been shown in him by Everton after signing a new five-and-a-half year contract with the club.

The Irish international is now set to remain at Goodison Park up until the summer of 2018.

The Donegalman signed for the Toffees from Sligo Rovers in January 2009 and has gone on to make 49 Premier League appearances for the club.
