Fears Given’s Retirement will spark further players to step down

Shay Given’s retirement has sparked fears other senior players may follow his lead ahead of the World Cup 2014 qualification campaign.

The 36 year old who won 125 caps for his country announced the decision last night saying it was " a great honour and privilege to play, and on occasion, captain the team".

Robbie Keane, Damien Duff and Richard Dunne are all said to be considering their futures but management are hoping they will stay on.

The republic of Ireland under 21 ‘s can guarantee at least second place in their Euro 2013 qualifier group with a win over Turkey at the Showgrounds in Sligo tonight.
